Prof Brian Cox On LHC

For anyone who is unsure what the fuss is all about regards the finding of a new Boson that seems to fit the predictions of one of the five Higgs Bosons according to the Standard Model (specifically the low mass Higgs Boson), have a look at this *excellent* TED presentation by the amazing Professor Brian Cox.

Say Welcome To The Higgs Boson

We now have quite significant evidence that the Higgs Boson is not the "god particle" - the Higgs Boson has been found to actually exist! :)

“We observe in our data clear signs of a new particle, at the level of 5 sigma, in the mass region around 126 GeV. The outstanding performance of the LHC and ATLAS and the huge efforts of many people have brought us to this exciting stage,” said ATLAS experiment spokesperson Fabiola Gianotti, “but a little more time is needed to prepare these results for publication.”

"The results are preliminary but the 5 sigma signal at around 125 GeV we’re seeing is dramatic. This is indeed a new particle. We know it must be a boson and it’s the heaviest boson ever found,” said CMS experiment spokesperson Joe Incandela. “The implications are very significant and it is precisely for this reason that we must be extremely diligent in all of our studies and cross-checks."

Bickfords Political Stunt Backfires

I just sent the following to

I just thought I had better write to let you know how disappointed I am with your company's participation in Tony Abbott's political stunt to oppose the carbon tax.  I have been a long-term Bickford's Lemon Barley Water consumer and as of this stunt, I am now an ex-Bickford's consumer.

As a responsible Australian and citizen of planet Earth, I fully support the Australian Government's efforts to reduce the effect that human activity may have on global warming and Australia's lead in this is something that other nations need to take a serious look at.  Your participation in Tony Abbott's political stunt is a clear alignment with a political party having little understanding of climate change and in particular, anthropogenic climate change.

I will post this letter to my blog and Facebook to ensure people understand how I feel about this issue and about your political alliance.  I know of others who are doing the same and I trust that more people will, too.

Catholic Church Sex Abuse

In case anyone missed it, the recent ABC Four Corners episode that investigated the catholic church and its handling of sexual abuse cases is available for watching online.

Four Corners seeks to address the issue that the catholic church is asked these days on a regular basis:

"The Catholic Church says its response to cases of child sex abuse should be compassionate, that abusers should be brought to justice and that concealing the truth is unjust to victims.

But does it follow those principles?"

Have a look at the show and make your own mind up - but the answer is very, very clear:

"In Victoria the Government is holding a joint party inquiry into the way religious and other non-government organisations respond to sex abuse cases. The Government was pressured into holding the inquiry after the release of a police report that criticised the Catholic Church's handling of abuse issues. The confidential police report revealed that the Church had known about a shockingly high rate of suicides and premature deaths but had "chosen to remain silent".

There is now a growing demand for the Federal Government to hold a national inquiry to assess the true extent of sexual abuse by all church groups and to assess the programs that have been put in place to assist victims and deliver them compensation."

This is a disgusting and disgraceful organization that protects child rapist priests and leaves the children who they ruined to their own ends - and those ends often lead to self-harm and suicide.

If you believe that a Royal Commission into the catholic church (and other NGOs) is needed to actually get the situation brought out into the daylight and handled properly, I suggest you sign the petition on asking for a Royal Commission into what's happening with our children.
